JAMES AVENUE ENTRANCE

THE JADE HOTEL

MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA

A 70-room boutique hotel just off Collins Avenue designed in Miami Beach’s original style of escapism, glamour and fantasy. In this case, it is a revival style of Ancient Greek island villas centering around an enclosed courtyard—best represented by the Villa Kerylos.

The impluvium roofed “lanai” doubles as the hotel’s entry lobby, located to capture maximum breezes between the Atlantic Ocean and Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway. At night, the courtyard’s open roof and intricate wood screens create a giant illuminated lantern.

—Although the board members of the Historic Preservation Board gushed over the design, it was ultimately decided that the style was ‘too traditional’ for the ‘Miami Modern’ district. A more ‘modern’ alternative was designed and approved. The property than changed hands and was then poorly executed after what appears to be rather significant value engineering.

The concept design for this project was developed while Jason was the Creative Director and co-founder of Atelier & Co. The subsequent design development and digital renderings were created by The Jason Grimes Company.
